Might be you're off one tooth on the distributor drive gear either way. I've had that problem at times, trying to get the drive gear lined up and then dropping it in one tooth off. Trying to pull it out without the tool is a futile effort, I bought one just for that reason. My pulley marks are like yours, they vary from year to year, you'd have to look at Bentley to see exactly what you have and hope the engine is still the same year as what was originally in there. You've done the check the same way I found out what my marks were. You can pull the distributor and see where the distributor drive lines up at the TDC mark, though. Compare with the diagram in Bentley or Muir. Might give you something else to worry about, anyway.
