Greetings from Minnesota, I'm new to the vw type 3 page and recently acquired a 1971 automatic squareback. I'm writing in response to the person who was asking about anyone who had a "rare" automatic a few days ago. Mine is truly a beauty! Everything as far as I know is original, with only 58,000 original miles on it. The shifting mechanism works great. My only complaint is that when the car shifts from 1st to 2nd, it kind of jumps, or clunks, but into 3rd is smooth, as well as coming back down. The car drives like a charm, just flys down the freeway. Of course it will be stored this winter indoors, never to touch salt in MN. The car was originally from the state of Washington. The body is totally solid, paint still very bright, interior looks like it came off the showroom floor! To be honest, I'm scared of the idea of having fuel injection...my 1971 bug, which is "simple" is hard enough for me to understand! pm Oh, one more thing, sometimes when the engine is cold, and first started up, it will idle fine, then almost stall out, then jump back to idleing fine again every few seconds. This fluctuation in idle stops after the car has been driven.
