Hi First of all let me say that I am very impressed with this site. I am also pleasantly surprised with the amount of listings, it gives me more of an incentive to get more work done on my own car. My first question is how do you get to the fresh air fan under the dash? It spins but it makes a terrible squealing noise. When I first got the car it worked until I turned it up to high speed then it started to squeal and now it does it all the time. I don't use it because I don't want to burn it up. I'm hoping that all I need to do is clean it up and grease the bearings. Second, does anybody have any window mechanisms? My windows only roll up and down if I pull on the window the same time I'm turning the handle. I need other parts but I'll deal with that when I get to it. Here we go again! My 71 squareback was FI when I bought it, but after I built the new engine (bought the car for $220 knowing it needed an engine) it was bellowing black smoke, getting about 8MPG, and going through many sets of plugs. I bought a Bosch FI manual, checked everything, replaced air pressure sensor and the whole harness and it still didn't work. So... I bought a set of 34 ICTs, put them on and now I get 20MPG in town and about 28-30MPG on the highway, it's a little finicky on cold mornings but let it warm up and it's fine. My opinion is that if you have FI and if it works, "Great!", and if it doesn't work try to fix it. As a last resort go to carbs. Just a note to set some minds at ease, I used to work on VWs back when I lived in Simi Valley CA and some here in Charlotte NC, so I do know about VWs. This is my 4th VW, but my first type 3 and I'm learning very quickly that all VWs are not created equal. Thanks for listening to my babbling.
