I'm still planning on hitting The Big Bug Shootout down in Waxahachie, Texas. Okay, here's my schedule so far: 1. Leave Portland, OR, Sept 22 with my friend and navigator, Travis Kalanick. Arrive in Boise, ID, and stay with a good college friend of mine (ex-girlfriend). 2. Leave Boise, ID, Sept 23 and take the long journey to Cedar City, UT. We'll be staying with Phil Dillard and his VW graveyard. 3. Leave Cedar City, UT, Sept 24 and journey to the Grand Canyon, do a little quick visiting, and continue to Flagstaff, AZ. Hit I-40 and journey to Santa Fe, NM, and from there to Armarillo, TX. Don't know the exact distances yet (just got the maps and route from AAA) and don't know where we'll stay. 4. Leave <wherever>, <AZ | NM | TX> (not sure), Sept 25 and travel to Dallas via 287. Arrive in Waxahachie sometime that day and slipping into a coma in the TraveLodge room reserved for us by Big Al (thanks again!). Anyone wanna detail my baby for me? 5. Sept 26 & 27 doin' the VW show and such. Depending when the day ends we may load up the wagon and hit the Oregon trail (head home). 6. Leaving Sept 27 or 28 and taking I-20 to El Paso, TX, I-10 to Phoenix, AZ, and to Los Angeles, CA. Don't know where we'll be stopping for the nights. Travis *has* to be in L.A. by Sept 30 because he has to be back to college Oct 1. 7. Leaving L.A., CA, Oct 1 and <groan> driving I-5 back to Portland, OR (home). The trip home isn't set in stone. Leaving Texas on Sunday may give me more time to get home so I may be able to stop for the night in northern California. Don't know. If there is anyone close to this route who would like to meet up please let me know! I'd like to see as many of you as possible, just remember I am on a time schedule. Brian Fye, I'd like to see you and your roadster when I hit Boise (will be evening time) so email me (phone number, availability, blah blah blah). I will be driving my baby so keep an eye out for a Bright Orange '72 Squareback with solid, chrome wheels, a black canvas rag top, "VW SQBK" license plates from Oregon and a zoned out driver behind the wheel zipping along 10mph above the speed limit.
