I now carry an oil drain plug with me in my tool box. Like points it takes up very little space and without it you are SCREWED! Thank God the sheriff in Maupin liked working on Bugs... It can be assumed you have a well equipped tool box, 1 gallon fuel canister, and a quart of your favorite oil. Check all fluid levels, maybe even have the chassis lubed if it's been awhile. Insure the spare tire is functional and you have a spare accelerator and clutch cable tucked in it. Don't forget about the jack -- can't put the spare on without it unless you can maneuver the bad tire over a ditch, somehow. I guess it boils down to just being prepared. At least if our cars breakdown it's far easier to fix 'em than a modern (and generally more reliable ;) vehicle.
