I think the various shapes just contribute to the stiffness. As someone else correctly pointed out, the only cars that get, or need, a seal here are those whose engines suck cooling air in from the engine compartment. I think it's important to realize that if you sealed off the topside of the type 3 engine, then there would be no air flow at all there, and that space would get quite hot. So there is really an advantage to leaving it unsealed.
