Re: [T3] newbie questions (many!)

And of course, I have to put my two pennies in as well!

I have a 70' Squareback (FI, Automatic) and it is one of
the most practical cars I have ever owned! (My other car is
a Ford Explorer Sport) The Square can hold just about as
much cargo as my Explorer can!

  I bought my Square last January, bought it on the Internet;
had it shipped to Houston from the Napa Valley. It is a fairly
rust free example. After installing new shocks, tires and
overhauling the brake system, I am totally amazed at how smooth
this vehicle rides and how great the handling is.

If you like the Notchback, by all means go fo it. I think
that the Notch offers "European Elegance" in the styling.
Even though my Square is of the "later" body style, the
earlier (rounder) style is higher on the "cuteness factor"
  scale.

I really never figured out why VW never offically imported
it to the US. (Canada Only), nor no Type 3 sales in Mexico.

Then there is the Type 3 Ghia. This is a rare animal unto
itself. I have only seen two in person. And for the vintage
"sporty look" there is the Fastback.

Look at the scrapbook section of the

  http://www.vwtype3.org

site, you will see some good pictures of all Type3 styles there.

For some REALLY interesting reading, go to the
The Type II and Type III Experience web site

  http://www.thesamba.com

and look at some of the factory brochures and VW aderts for our cars
that are scanned in there. If that doesn't set your heart afire for a
  T3,  nothing will! (:->!

In closing, save your $$ and buy the best car you can find. Mine
was a pretty good complete example, and I have spent about $900
replacing worn out parts (but I only paid $750 for the car) and
about 100 hours of work, and I haven't even started on the body
yet! It now runs great and I expect it to be reliable. And remember
the "right" T3 for you may not be available when you want it.
I took about 4 months from the time I knew I wanted one until I
  found the one I have.

Let us know what you find.

  Sincerely,
  Allen Moore
  Houston, TX
