The gaskets are cheap and can be reused several times. Even I (Mr.
Cheap) would not bother trying to make my own.

To make 10W-30 oil, for example, you take 10W oil and add a
"viscosity enhancer" to it so that it will also pass the 30 viscosity
test. The only problem with this is that the early viscosity
enhancers stood up poorly to shear and high temps, so they did not
last well in the ACVW engine where the temps were higher than in a
water cooled car. So it you used 10W-30, you would end up running
your car on 10W before the next oil change.

When our cars were new, multigrade oils were in their infancy, so VW
recommended straight weight oils. Since then, oils have greatly
improved, and I don't think there is much reason to worry about this.
Still, I like to limit the amount of viscosity enhancer that my
engine is depending on, so I like to limit the span of the weight
range. I use 10W-30 in the winter, but I would prefer to use 20W-40,
rather than 10W-40, in the summer. Unfortunately, I have not been
able to buy 20W-40 for years. There is some 15W-40 out there, but it
is expensive, so I haven't tried it.
