When oriented correctly, there's a big (inch or so) circular hole in the bottom of the generator. This hole lines up with an opening in the fan housing which provides cooling air to the generator. A little mark (a little line) on "top" of the generator lets you know that you've got it oriented correctly when you install it. At under $10, small, and very important, a spare set of brushes makes a good addition to a kit of spares! Though, I suppose, if you are very routine about checking them, they shouldn't catch you by surprise. On the other hand, a generator once got mysteriously damaged (crud fed to it via the fan?), and a rough commutator (I think) ground the brushes down in a couple of days' time. Makes lotsa sparks & a cool noise. :-o -Greg ------------------------------------------------------------------- Search old messages on the Web! Visit http://www.vwtype3.org/list/
