Jim, isn't a well built 1600 a thing of beauty? I had a 71 Square with a 1600; mild cam, dual baby Webers and baffled stinger that just ran and ran. By far the most power and most reliable 1600 I have ever owned. It easily pulled its way up Cabbage Hill (2800ft of curves in 4 and 1/2 miles in the Blue Mts.). Sometimes it is just a lucky combination, but more times than not, it is the builder's consistency. The gent that built that set-up, built my current 1933cc Roadster motor. This set up is 'low flight' fast and still sips the fuel. Latest mpg is 27 with dual dellortos. And his similar set up motors easily turn 65,000+ miles before rebuild. Not bad for stroker cranked motors. Most of this rambling is to remind people, if you find a good VW mechanic in your area...share your knowledge with other listees. In southern Idaho, eastern Oregon, north Nevada and north Utah look for Rick Taylor (208)466-3913. He's not cheap, but he builds them to last, and has all necessary parts needed to build a turnkey Type 3 motor. In the same area, for body work, Shawn McConnichie at 'Howe Auto body' in Caldwell, Idaho. He owns and understands how to prep and paint 30+ year old VWs. If we continue to build a network of reliable services our cars will all benefit. Brian Fye 64 Notch Roadster ------------------------------------------------------------------- Too much?
