It sounds like a handful of ball bearings slowly being poured into a 
slightly muffled metal waste basket.

The sucking sound is just the sound of the oil being sucked into the 
oil pickup tube.  It is normal, but usually only noticable when the 
oil level is a little low.

I think that on any bug after about '66, you should be able to do 
this just the same as on a type 3.  I have no experience with this, 
however, and would be pleased to be educated if necessary.
