That's right, Jim - no plastic layer required before maybe 1980 (just a guess), though it was available as an optional extra. But we have had our brakes, steering, lights and chassis checked for road-worthiness for some 30 years now. Guess we're not really all that backward. ;-) Is it really true there isn't any regular testing of roadworthiness in some of the States? Dave. Do you mean that your front glass is not laminated with a plastic center layer? I knew that this was often used in third world countries, but had assumed that all the industrialized countries required the same laminated (safety plate) glass as the US does. Our side glass is like you describe: tempered so it fragments into small pieces that cause minimal human damage.
