Re: type3-d Digest V98 #323

Hey Everybody,

I am new to the list and thought I would introduce myself and ask a quick
question or two.

I just bought my first T3. I have had type 1's &2's littered throughout
my past. I really hope I got a good deal on this vehicle.

A older couple was selling it for their estranged son. He left it with
them after he had an accident and was unable to deal with it before
leaving for college. I paid them $275.00. They were unable to get it
started and I had to tow it away.

I will have to do some work on the right front fender and the bumper.
There is very little rust anywhere on the car. They said that he was
adamant about everything being vintage, all the numbers seem to be in
order so I am happy with that. I couldn't get the car started, but, I
have worked on alot of VW engines and didn't think I would have much of a
problem getting it going. First thing I did was run out and buy a new
battery, that got all the lights and everything going, But it still
wouldn't start. Last night I did some surfing and found www.vwtype3.org,
thats how I got here. I was really just goofing around getting some
useful tips when I read the info on the automatic transmission. It said
that the transmission needed to be in Neutral to start. So at 2:30 am, I
ran out the back door in my underwear, grabbing my keys as I went and
hopped in. Thrust my key in, stepped on the brake, shifted carefully.
Vroom! Its started nearly right up. I had to pump the gas a bit. But she
is purring away. I just know they had the same problem I did. ;)

Now the problem: When he had the accident, He hit his head on the
windshield, and busted it up pretty good. So I have to replace it. I have
done the glass on a bus before, but never on the windsheild or on a type
III. How dangerous is this to do? What are the odds that I will break it
going in? Should I have a professional handle this? Quotes around town
are running about $200.00 to $250.00 to ship in the glass and install it
in my driveway. Is this reasonable, or should I consider putting it in
myself? What's the going rate and who might be carrying it?

Thanks for listening,

Robert Minor
