It was a check valve that allowed gas to flow from the tank to the fuel pump only if there were pressure coming out of the pump. I have never seen one, can't imagine how they would work and still allow you to ever recover from running out of gas, and don't know why they were not thought necessary on the single carb cars. As I understand it, they were supposed to keep gas from flowing thru the carbs of a parked car and filling up 1 cylinder. Installing a good float valve seems like a much easier solution. Apparently the problem arises because in our cars, the gas tank is higher than the carbs. So in a emergency, you don't even need a fuel pump if your tank is more than 1/4 full.
