Re: [T3] Upright engine in a T3

Joe=> will a type 1 engine fit in a square will type one fanshroud fit
=> up through the engine compartment hole

This question comes up frequently, and we've discussed it a lot. The
consensus has been that yes, it's possible to do this, but the fan
shroud and carb(s) will stick up into the cargo compartment, making your
Squareback far less functional, and the T1 cooling system cannot work
properly with the T3 body. Some people say they don't mind this result
too much, but most agree that it's a very poor fit that damages both the
car and the engine. It's also unnecessary, since T3 cases and parts are
not especially difficult to find. We won't call you names, I promise,
but we will encourage you to try to find the engine that will give you a
positive T3 experience. Maybe you can make a deal with Erich, who seems
to have a spare:

Erich=> I do know for fact that the opposite is possible

I don't know what you've seen, but it won't work for long. The cooling
systems are quite different, and a T3 engine stuck in a T1 application
will only draw cooling air off the exhaust. Kiss of death, both for the
engine and yourself if you turn on the heat in traffic.

=> I would love to drop the stock single port Type 1 I have in my Square
=> so I can drive it untill I can afford to build the proper engine. I
=> have 2 complete T-3 pancakes

Here's the path of most sense and least resistance: strip the T1 down to
the long block and dress it with parts from one of your T3s. Cooling,
fuel, exhaust, electrical, heating, everything. If both those T3s are
FI, offer the FI systems here in trade for a single-port carb setup.
Put it all together right and you may save yourself the expense of the
rebuild you're contemplating. That's in addition to saving yourself from
the seized engine you'd eventually have to deal with if you take what
may seem like the easier road. With the parts you have on hand and this
list, you're in good shape to do a good job, so go to it!
