As I wrote earlier, later cars don't have drain plugs. Muir also writes 
that VW thought not enough people were cleaning the screen, so to 
encourage them to go all the way they started leaving out the drain 
hole. You have to take off the whole cover. It's messy but not too bad 
if you're careful.
