I believe that the oil drain plug was left off of the 1971 and up
 models to encourage people to clean the oil strainer. VW felt that
 too may people were ignoring this procedure and just putting in 
 new oil without cleaning the strainer. I read this somewhere, it 
 may even have been in the Bentley.
