That sounds similar to the 'fool flow' system on my '71 parts squareback. I haven't pulled the engine yet, but I did recognize the fitting from the main gallery (with a rubber hose hose-clamped over the threads, no less!) as 3/4 inch galvanized water pipe. No wonder it wasn't running (other than the dissapearing carbs).
