The piston does contact the cylinder wall due to a slight wobble because of
the few thousandths of space between the piston and the cylinder as the piston
rocks top to bottom and slides side to side on the piston pin. If the cylinder
walls are scored this roughness then starts to work on the pistons. If you
look at the top of the piston as it is installed in the engine, most of the
wear should be at the top and bottom on the head and skirt of the piston due
to the rocking motion and all along the sides due to the sliding motion. And
yes the oil will show signs of gas getting in past the pistons. I had that
problem on one of my non-VW cars, at times it seemed as if the oil level would
actually rise!
