[T3] manual vs. automatic transmission

Hello again.  After conducting some further research, I have a couple of
general questions for all of you.  I could be opening up a new debate
that could prove to be as vicious as the recent one over FI vs. carbs :
) , but here goes:

1. Are automatic transmissions more troublesome and difficult to deal
with than manual ones?
2. Are there significant drawbacks to having an automatic transmission
as far as operation goes (not enough power when you need it, uses more
gas, etc.)?

Any thoughts, experiences, gripes or suggestions would be swell.  Thanks
a bunch.
