The OE AT knob is black plastic.  Mine screws on, I don't recall ever 
seeing one that was different, although the 914 MT knob is a press on 
part.

Next time you drive anywhere go easy on the brakes as you get close 
to your destination and then check the temp of all 4 brake drums and 
rotors.  Just stick a couple of fingers through one of the slots in 
the wheel.  Be careful.  If one of your calipers is dragging you can 
burn yourself badly.  The hot wheel has brake problems.  If nothing 
is hot you may have a wheel bearing going out or just a stone caught 
behind a rotor.  Or rust dragging on the edge of a rotor or drum.
