RE: FW: [T3] The Virgin or here we go again...

Ah, I missed a paragraph. Okay, the fuel pump itself makes the ticking
(really a slow buzzing would be more accurate in my opinion), and it's
located in the front of the car, on the passenger side (I'm pretty certain,
it's been a while).

Make sure the lines to the pump and to the injectors are clear, no leaks.
There is a screen at the fuel outlet of the gas tank, right where the fuel
line connects to the tank, that is often clogged (especially after two
years!), as well as a fuel filter before the fuel pump, which can clog as
well.

If the screen, filter, and lines are replaced/clear; and you can hear the
fuel pump whirring/buzzing; then your fuel pump is defective, buzzing or
not. You should be able to test the out put with a clamp and a fresh line
running from the pump outlet to a separate gas can. Make sure the line
won't blow out of the hole in the gas can, turn the key on and (assuming it
starts spraying gas) off again. Be careful, though, as at 25 or so psi, the
gas will spray unrestrained like 8 feet (personal experience, there); quite
a geyser, if you're not expecting it.

Might not be a bad idea to get the gas tank out, too; and take it to a place
that will boil it out and test it. I took mine to a radiator shop, and they
boiled, cleaned and tested it for leaks, pretty cheap. The gas turns to
varnish fairly quickly, and that plays hell with all of the delicate FI
parts (it does on carbs, too, but they're a lot less specific on
clearances).

Your problem sounds like a screen/filter dealie, though. But the pump could
be shot, make sure there's gas getting to the pump in plenty, and then check
the pump.

I don't think you'll be able to hear the injectors ticking, as I think they
only tick when the FI trigger points are activated (that is done by the
rotating camshaft on the distributor, meaning the car has to be turning
over/running for that to happen).

The books that everybody talks about are pretty much invaluable, and you
should invest soon, if you haven't. There's also some fairly plainly spoken
information linked to the 'Owner's Manual' section of the
www.type3@vwtype3.org <mailto:www.type3@vwtype3.org> site, that is pretty
helpful.

Where are you located? Perhaps a more experienced listee and you could hook
up and talk shop...

I assumed that the fuel injectors would make that ticking noise
regardless if they were getting fuel or not... I know not what makes
	the "ticking" sound.. .please explain....

I can hear that from inside the car alone....
