AWG is of course something uniquely american, but also an unscientific
unit. Its right up there with inches, pounds, gallons, cups, stones,
thimbles. All not connected through logic but still probably good for
baking.

The usual car bodywork sheetmetal thickness is 0.88 mm. I don't know
why.
Most cars are still made of this thickness (at least the german ones).
When measuring you definitely have to account for the thickness of the
paint. Also the paint actually increases the stiffness of large flat
body panels.

Another increasingly common sheetmetal thickness is 0.75 mm. Mostly used
for fenders (I've measured this on a french car).
On rear engined VW's I have never measured anything under 0.88, except
where the metal is particulary stretched during the forming process.
