Hello Everbody (Say this like Dr. Nick on the Simpsons) Last weekend I spent two and a half days installing the engine I bought for my notchback. If ya'll don't remember, I purchased an engine complete with dual 34 solexes and linkage from a guy that was parting out a squareback. I don't think it was original, it was in a '69. Anyhow, The motor was attached to an automatic transaxel and had the torque converer attached to it. This is what I spent the first day doing. I took it to my cousins shop and we loosened up the gland nut after the converter was off. This came off pretty easily with a impact wrench. I had to buy a new gland nut 'cus the old one was missing the bearing (is this not needed in the autotransaxel setup?). Next we started to install the new flywheel. According to the book in his shop, we needed to set the endplay to .002 to .006 in. - we put the old shims in and attached the flywheel and we were way off. I can't rember the exact number, but we needed the shims to total .038 between the three of them. We ended up buying two .012 shims and 1 .013 shim. When we got back to the shop and reinstalled the shims, there was no endplay at all. We miss calculated, and ended up using a combination of some of the old and new shims and old ones. The end play ended up being .004, which seemed to be within the suggesed range. Then we installed the clutch and pressure plate with a clutch alignment tool and were done. This was all done while the motor was sitting in the back of my dad's truck. The next day My brother and I lifted the motor down onto a 2 x 2 piece of plywood sitting on top of a floor jack with two 2x4's on each side to stable it. We jacked it up and slid it back and everything went together. The only problem was the bolt that holds the engine to the transaxel on the top by the clutch lever. This car was missing both the engine and transaxel, and I had to buy bolts from the VW parts place. They guy gave me two of the same lenght bolts for the top. I had to go to the hardware store (on Sunday) to get a shorter bolt. I found out something I didn't know the day I bought the motor. In late '69 they changed the tail lights to the larger late model size. Round front end and big tail lights! Unless the owner was pulling my leg. Anyone know if this is true?
