Re: [T3] Fuchs alloys

Hi Charles,

I'm making an assumption that 'Fuchs' alloys are the wide 5 spoke
Porsche alloys we all know and love and not some other type of Porsche
wheel. I believe I've heard them called that before.

That being said, in my search for a set of Porsche alloys for my bug,
I did find out that yes there are indeed various sizes of them out
there. What I ended up with is as follows...

2'69 912 (only year made I believe) 4.5"x15" alloys for the front - very
hard to find as they were 1 year only. You will need a smaller
wheel for the front so they don't rub the inner fender when you turn
if the front end is lowered. They are out there though,
after all I found some just last August. You can figure on paying
around 600+ for a good pair of wheels. Sometimes the owners will only
sell them if you all 4 of their wheels - which was my case.

For the rear, I got 6"x15" alloys with 195 tires on them. These are
easy to locate.

I wasn't really looking for fully polished wheels, but this set was
so I went with it anyway. I kind of like contrasts that why I was
originally looking for the polished spokes and rims with black
recesses. Anyway, add into either redrilling your rotors/drums or
buying a redrilled set as Porsche wheels are not a direct bolt on.
The set I scored came with excellent redrilled brake drums, I was
lucky. Go to as many VW/Porsche swap meets as you can and just look
around. I found mine at that the last Sacto Bug-o-rama swap meet area.

They are beautiful wheels, but not without some challenges. You can
probably count on paying around 800 to 1K for all four wheels/tires/
drums. Not for the weak hearted. Good luck in your search, hope this
has been helpfull.

Regards,
Tom Cloud
