Windscreen seal (was Damp floors)

Hi again.  Thanks to those who responded to my question about leaks 
in the notchback.  Many people wanted to accuse the drain hoses, but 
that's the first thing I checked when this problem began.  

It seems likely that the windsreen seal is leeking and allowing water to
run down the defroster vent.  Is it possible to seal between the 
windscreen seal and the paint?  I'm asking this because original type 
replacement seals are frighteningly expensive here, so I'm hoping I 
can get by without replacing them (my original seals look pretty 
good, though of course they're not as young as they were.....)
