HI!

First off its not the wires, its poor connections and the ignition switch
that causes problems with a 6V car.

Secondly the relay is the right idea but you need one that can make and break
60amps or so inductive, them theres some mighty beefy contacts!  Make sure you
use a suitable relay such as a 6V headlamp relay (even this might not be
strong enough).
