Hunter, It sounds to me from your description that you adjusted one valve and then turned the engine. The pattern should go two valves, turn the engine; two more valves, turn the engine; etc. When you put the engine at the #1 firing position, you then adjust both the intake *and* exhaust valves for cylinder #1. As you look at the right side head, those are the two valves on the right. After doing those, turn the crankshaft 90 degrees counter-clockwise and then do the other two valves on the right head--those for cylinder #2.
