Laura Halliday (an old-time lister not "around" any more) successfully did a similar swap into a Type III; Greg, You will be happy to hear that it will work, I did the swap 2 weeks ago ( have to tear appart the type 3 tranny (shift forks need to be adjusted)) in the mean time I have put in a tranny from a 74 beetle..... I had to use the nose cone from my 71 square ( 2 bolt mount ( 74 beetle has a 3 bolt nose cone mount))... and also had to use the type 3 "hockey stick".... because the type 3 shift rod coupler is secured from under the car the dimple points down-- on beetle shift rod is secured from on top ( dimple on top) the only thing is that your engine will be turning slower RPMs ( and slower take off speed)..... which means less cooling.... I willl eventually put the type 3 tranny back in........ but the type 1 tranny will work.....
