So much for my 90 second test of the car in the parking lot day before yesterday... (and not listening carefully enough to my wife's description of the symptoms...) ...it's the tranny, not the throwout bearing or pressure plate or whatever. When parked, gearshift in neutral: Clutch pedal pushed = everything *quiet* No pedals pushed = terrible noises Driving: Not particularly noisy when accelerating Noisy as heck when slowing down (clutch pedal pressed or not) So, if the input shaft is turning, it makes a terrible noise. Time for the spare tranny... ...it's out of a '74 Beetle. Laura Halliday (an old-time lister, not "around" any more) successfully did a similar swap into a Type III; apparently by swapping front mount bits it works just fine. (Anyone care to independently confirm this?) Fun, fun... -Greg '69 & '71 Squarebacks '63 Beetle
