I don't recommend using a mechanical gauge unless you keep it in the engine compartment -- and that doesn't do you much good while driving! My first oil pressure gauge was a mechanical one. Threading the tubing was a pain and the pressure reading delays and inaccuracy was annoying. After a couple of weeks I returned it for the VDO electric one I currently have (with second terminal for idiot light!) and have been very happy with it. Even still, if you are using a stock oil cooler, I seriously doubt that the engine could be producing enough pressure to blow through. My little monster used to start up with over 150 psi in the mornings (Castrol 20w-50 dino juice) and I never had a problem (now I have the GB pressure relief pump cover and it keeps oil pressure below 130 psi). Of course, my oil pressure relief pistons are working properly. As described in posts last week you may want to check yours to make sure they are working properly.
