Hi Doug > I just received a VDO oil temp gauge that I'd ordered a few days ago...the > setup looks pretty straightforward (its going in my 69 auto FI squareback), > but I was wondering what temps I should be looking for when I get this > thing hooked up. Like what are the recommended tempertures, and what tempt > indicate the engine is running dangerously hot? With the VDO temp pickup installed on top of the oil cooler I get about 80¡C in town, up to 95¡C on the highway and up to 110¡C going over mountains. Never seen it higher than 115¡C and the engine seemed happy enough up there at the time. Putting the temp pickup on top of the oil cooler gives IMHO a very accurate picture of whats happening behind you. Earlier this year I was making a trip through some semi desert area, coming back from a parts hunt, and - as I got closer to the coast had to descend a rather steep mountain pass. At the top of the pass the temp reading was 105¡C and fell to 80¡C as I was going downhill simply because the engine was braking the car and being coolled down all the time without more heat being produced.
