TheoB=> Didn't the type 3 come with a single sidedraft carb at one time? Yup. I once lived for a time in a stock single-carb Square. Michele=> The stereotypical girl who does not know anything about cars ... I very much sympathize with your situation, and I'm sorry that what you're learning about cars right now is so unhappy. In your place, given that you seem to have lost this battle (although I would encourage you to seek other options for getting your money back), whatever happens with the check-guarantee company I would not take take my car anywhere near that mechanic again. Cut your losses, don't get involved with a secondary battle, and find someone you can trust. After all, the whole point is to get you back on the road happily driving your T3. None of us can afford to throw away eight hundred bucks, but at this point it looks as though fighting for it will likely do you more harm. Once your car is well and truly fixed, you'll have a lot more info on what the first mechanic actually did or didn't do. This would be a much stronger basis for getting restitution later. The lesson you've brought us with this story is an important one that we need to have reinforced from time to time: if it's not right, *don't pay*! Steven Ayres, Prescott AZ '66 KGhia 1600
