T3: Re: gen. belt, shocks, and pop out questions

My rule of thumb is that you should have your belt tight enough to be
able to turn the engine over with a 21mm wrench on the generator
nut(since that's how I set the valves). If you have any glaze at all
on that belt, dump it and get a good Gates or other name brand. Be
wary of Italian imports, I started out with one of those, had to get
rid of it in 6 months, was totally stretched out. This Gates has
lasted at least 4 years, no cracks, checks or glazing yet.

On your charging problem, there's a lot of things that need to be
looked at if you haven't already. The regulator under the seat is
grounded by the mounting screws, I had a lot of trouble with mine
since that area is really rusty. I had to run a separate ground to
the car body from the regulator body. The condition of your battery
ground strap and terminals will have a lot to do with it, too.
FInally, you might just have a wornout generator and it's time for a
rebuild.

The brushes on the generator have no connection to your pulley shims,
if you look in the hole at the front you can see one, with the spring
on it(assuming it's still there). These wear out, can be replaced for
about $5. If your commutator is rough they'll wear out again,
rapidly. Best thing to do is to get the generator overhauled and the
commutator turned smooth if the brushes are that worn, not a big deal.
About a 10 minute job for the machine shop with the right setup, I do
my own. If you can see a lot of sparks when the thing is charging,
it's worn.
