They are a bandaid for a more serious problem. If you think you need them you should read some of Berg's stuff on them and counterweighted cranks. There's really a good detective story there. In the end it is simpler and much more effective to cure the root problem. The stock clips are fine in almost all cases. The cause of the problem is bent rods and/or flexing cranks that cause a side load on the wrist pin.
