I think putting help info on a database, like MS Access, and making it
web
accessible through ASP or Cold Fusion or whatever for searching would be
cool.
This would allow endusers to search for specific criteria instead of
having to
read through a web list or posting a general "help me" to the email
list. A
database also allows better and easier reporting functions (# of T3
owners
living in Germany vs. US, average age of T34 owners in Africa, etc.)
Although the physical location is very nice to know it's not as
essential as an
email address. Kenik Hassel, Clyde Berg and I have been corresponding
via email
on my tranny yet we each live in a separate state. And all the info on
dropping
the drivetrain I've received has come from y'all as well, and just about
everyone is far from local to me (of those who responded). Mailing
address
doesn't need to be in the database as a simple email or phone request
can be
used if it is required. As a suggestion, the *nearest* major city may
be
desired. Example: I live in Philomath...where the Hell is that? Next
to
Corvallis (I really live in Beaverton [Portland] but used to live there
and
nobody knew Philomath but did know Corvallis).
I would recommend that the time zone be included in the helpers info --
I'm sure
someone on the Right Coast wouldn't want to be disturbed at 11:00pm from
someone
on the Left Coast at 8:00pm 8o
One thing people need to know, both those who are willing to help and
those
looking for help, is that you don't want to become a mechanic unless you
have no
life like me :) Unless the helper says otherwise it should be noted
that the
Help List is for occasional help and not full time...abuse can cause
friction
and the helper may end up wanting to get paid for time rendered if abuse
continues from one helpee (the person seeking help).
Just random thoughts, I'm sure more will crop up later,
