On that '72, underneath the bumper, your car probably had a trailer hitch
at one time. The holes would be about 1/2 inch (13mm) dia. [this is fron
memory, so approximate]

The '68-69 cars had individual backup lights that mounted on brackets or on
the bumper similar to what you have described.

Your '72 has backup lights built into the taillights, so this was not so.
(Unless a PO REALLY wanted to see when they backed-up...)
