Working on old mailing list archives

Hi all,

Some of you may recall that I have all of the posts ever made to
tye Type III list(s), and I've begun putting them on the web. The trick
is, of course, to make them serachable. I've got maybe a quarter or a
third of my archives up, but they take too long to search with the perl
cgi script I'm using--the server times out half of the time before the
search is complete, and things get worse very quickly when multiple word
searches are done.

I've poked around with making the files a bit smaller & stuff like
that, but, of course, this is just a band-aid; as the archives grow, the
same problem will again surface.

I've begun working with "glimpse" and "WebGlimpse" software to do
faster (and more sophisticated) searches. Have any of you had experience
with WebGlimpse? I'd love to chat. (This should prove to be faster
because it's compiled C code, unlike perl which is not compiled, and
glimpse creates its own data index for searches--these indices can be much
smaller than the raw files.)
