Putting a fan to blow into the heater boxes will NOT blow air over the engine. The fan would have to be placed some where between the rear air plenum and the stock fan to get extra air over the engine. More than likely the fan will be useless while driving and only push more air over the engine when the engine is idling, like at a stop. You need to clarify what you mean by "hotter". Do you live on the equator or are you increasing your cylinder compression above stock? The stock system was well designed and there isn't much you can do to improve upon it, unfortunately. An external oil cooler will only be effective if it's put in a stream of air. Under the body is bad because one flying pebble can punch a hole in it and drain the engine of oil. Putting the cooler in an area where the engine cooling air enters is a big no-no as well. The cooler and engine air must be separate sources. Also, the external cooler MUST have a thermostat. Only if the oil reaches or exceeds a certain temperature should the thermostat allow oil to flow to the cooler. Period. Oil thermostats are available from many after-market VW shops (like off-road places) and after-market Porsche shops and dealers. In order to effectively use an external cooler you should have your engine setup for a full flow oil filtration system, like what Gene Berg sells for the TYPE III. Type I and II bolt-on after-market equipment won't work on a T3! I think it is not as heavy as the single quiet pack that I tossed 'cause it was trashed and while I am on exhaust I was thinking during the summer to plug the fan to the heater boxes so more air will blow over the engine is this ok or am I just loopy???? last thing for now I promise any one using a eternal oil filter/cooler. I want to put one in but I wanted to know if I can put it in after I am finished with the rebuild ( yes I am going to use the stock oil cooler also). if so where did you put it???? I am only going to rebuild 1600 but 'cause it is hotter than they were designed for I want to help her out as much as possible. ...
