There's an access plate under the car, at the head end of the tranny(has to be, the shifter rod has to hook into the tranny somehow), three small screws, don't lose. Put the rear of the car up on ramps, you should be able to get to it then. What I've had was a bad shift coupler(after-market), that the setscrew gave up on, threads in the coupler wore larger, caused a lot of slop at the joint. Couldn't pull the tranny rod far enough forward to keep from popping out in reverse and second. Replaced it with a genuine VW part(cheap), no more problems. One thing about the access plate, there's supposed to be an odd-shaped rubber gasket to keep water out of the shifter tunnel, every one I've seen has crumbled or is totally missing. I used silicone sealant to make a gasket for it. Mine also had a bad shift rod bushing, $.50 part that takes all day to replace, what a job. Made a big difference in the feel of the shifter, though.
