RE: [T3] Engine ramblings

Well, Toby, I don't know what to tell you.

	>>You know, our engines are so un-modern (???) it's funny. Here I
am
trying to get more horsepower out of my engine and having to worry
about
something simple like heat build-up and these modern cars (European
and
	Asian)

I understand you guys are out there, darking it up, making the world
fun for VW owners; and you're right, short of major components, you really
can't get more than like 15-20% horsepower increase out of our cars. The
other side of the coin, though, is that these euro-jobs and major
rice-rockets you're looking at are 20 and 30 thousand dollar cars. *And*
the modifications they've done are just as invasive as opening the case on
our motors.

There's no easy fix for an economy car. Our cars were built by
conservative (hyper, hyper conservative) German engineers in the 60's and
70's, to toodle around in picturesque Alpine towns and be economical and
dependable. What can I say? I think it's a notable value of our cars that
it *is* so easy to get them to do what they do, like your (or other
noteworthies) car. I can't imagine that there is not a T3 out there as bad
as my old beetle that can hit second gear to the point that the back end
gets loose; and it'll still pass emissions.

I love my T3 for many reasons, not the least of which is its' low
cost of operation (I recently had a tank that was all highway where I
actually turned 31.2 mpg! - I'm back to more usual 24 and change now,
though), uniqueness, and charm. I have to admit that I've never been a very
dark kinda guy, and I appreciate the labour all of you Vader acolytes have
put into your machines.

I don't really know what my point is, except maybe don't sell our
little cars short. If you were to put the same kind of money into your Type
3, you'd get similar results.

	My 2p.

Funny story, a friend of mine just gave me 2 British pennies over
the carpenter's birthday season, because I use that phrase so much!
