Dear Type III digest subscribers, Several of you have reported that your e-mail provider, Hotmail, does not properly show you the digest version of the list. This appears to be a result of the way SmartList produces the digest in "MIME" format instead of plain text. (Well, it all really is plain text, but the table of contents and the body, for example, are described by the MIME encoding as being separate, distinct things.) Many of you (not Hotmail users!) actually benefit by this format, as it helps you sort through the digest. I have three choices of what I might do: 1) do nothing, and Hotmail subscribers cannot (effectively) get the digest; 2) modify the digest to produce ordinary, plain text so that everyone can view it... but some folks lose the extra bonus of MIME encoding; or 3) create an additional version of the digest -- in effect, a *third* mailing list -- which is plain text only. Number one is easiest, of course. :) Also, Hotmail subscribers can actually read the Web-based version of the list since they've all got Web access; one could argue that they don't *really* need to be regular subscribers anyway. If we do number two, some folks who like the MIME messages lose out; there may be more losers here than there are Hotmail winners! Number three adds to the overall complexity of things ("Which list was I subscribed to?") and would take a great deal of effort. If you have strong opinions regarding any of these three options, please drop me a line! -Greg Merritt '69 & '71 Squarebacks ------------------------------------------------------------------- Search old messages on the Web!
