Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings but there are a few things that could be
bad
1. Front end fuel pump could be intermittently working or not at all (which I
suspect could be the problem) which would explain the LOW p.s.i. 
2. Could be clogged injectors. Whilst you have played your little gas trick
your injector(s) could still be gummed up (just think for every clogged
injector you have one less cylinder running?!?) which could do the same thing.
3. Could be that the motor isn't fuel starved might be starved for good ol'
O2 which I doubt but Hey never know.
    So in the end what I'm saying is this don't do anything brash & get
yourself the Bosch manual on their F.I. System. While not 100% helpful (won't
get on the ground & fix your car for you.LOL 8-P) it is very informative if
you are willing to crunch the info set before you.
