Happy Monday, Volks. I have a story from the weird-o-meter for you. After having used my dutiful steed Deathrich (now turning an average of 24.7mpg, thanks to all) to move a friend of mine, I was driving a co-mover back to his house, when I heard an odd noise from behind me. 'Ding, ding, da-ding, ding, d-d-d-d-d-d-d-ding!' and the genera?"Ă¢Ator light came on. Insert long stream of loud, and very descriptive expletives here. I power down, and steer for the shoulder. 'Damn! I shed a belt!' think I, hoping secretly that my pulley didn't shear in half. But, hey, it's okay, as I just re-stocked with a spare! I push the car under a street light, whip open the trunk, get the belt and head for the engine cover. I get it off, and to my horror, the belt is like-new; black, shiny and perfect. Worse? It's loose. *Really* loose. In fact, in moving it, I hear the sound of aluminum contacting sheetmetal. Insert more graphic profanity here, along with much fist-pounding. Quick inspection revealed that the 30mm bolt had come loose from my crankshaft, and the pulley was no longer snug. Nothing else appeared to be damaged, so quick tightening (I don't usually carry a 30mm socket with me, so thanks to the GF for running out to save me -- *boy* do these little things have to stop happening!) and everything seemed to be okay. Long story short (too late), I'm back on the road. I still have to torque it down, but is there anything I should be concerned about? In all my years of driving, I've never had a crank bolt just back out on me before. ------------------------------------------------------------------- List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list or mailto:help@vwtype3.org
