I guess those would be Imperial gallons; they are 25% bigger than the US gallons (20 fluid ozs to the pint, rather than 16). Your figures are pretty much the same as my experience. 34 mpg (Imp) for fast touring (65 - 75 mph motorway driving) with around 30 mpg in town driving, on the twin carb; maybe a few less on the FI (I drive it a bit harder). 30.8 mpg (Imp) is about 25 mpg (US). The Type 3 is about 25% heavier than the Beetle. Apologies if you have already converted the figures to US gallons, Carl. Dave.
