When I bought my 68 squareback (March 2, 1968) VWoA "guaranteed" that these cars (they did not differentiate between squareback and fastback) would get 27 or 28 (I forget which) mpg. When mine did not, I approached the dealer and asked about this. The answer that I was given was that none of them actually did this well in real driving, that the guarantee was for steady driving at 50 mi/hr, level road, warmed up engine, no wind, no stops, measured course and gas, etc, etc. Since those were the days of 65 mi/hr speed limits, there was nowhere that anyone cruised for long distances at this slow a speed, so no way to know if my car would ever pass. While it sometimes came close, or did better with a tailwind, I never really had one that did better than this in general. All my experience, however, has been with FI type 3s. Keep in mind that I have been doing this (driving type 3s almost exclusively and keeping accurate, and continuous, mileage records) since that day in 1968. While I have no doubt that there must have been type 3s that did better than my admittedly small statistical sample, I suspect that the rather large claims often heard here are exaggerated, mistakes, flukes, or otherwise explained by outside circumstances. For example, I can point you to one 38 mi/gal tankfull in my records, but the record doesn't mention the 40mi/hr tailwind that I had that day. Similar errors arrise when one does not top off the tank consistently each time, so only a long term average is truly meaningful.
