I have a very bad copy of a microfiche article from the June 1968 Motor Trend that compares the then new Chevy II to the new FI 68 VW Fastback. It was a fuel eceonmy comparison that was requested by a CA Chevy dealer who thought his new Chevy II's would beat the VW. The results: VW Chevy Average MPG 39.07 28.92 Best MPG 45.21!!!! 33.10 High Speed MPG 30.00 17.45 And this is where the relevance comes in, during the high speed test run they topped out both cars. The result: VW Chevy Top Speed 86mph 80mph It is interesting that the Chevy has 153 cu.in. and 90 hp while the VW is only 97 cu.in. and 65 hp. The VW did have a 4 speed trans and the Chevy a 3 speed, but the FI in the VW (chevy was still carburated) really seems to make a difference. Of course the 750lbs of extra weight that the Chevy lugged around did not help either. The article is really too poor of a reproduction to scan, but the last page spec sheet is pretty decent. My new (did I mention I got a scanner)OCR software should be able to make sense of it, if anyone wants a copy. P-mail me at jaranson@the-bridge.net. Later, John Jaranson 71 FI Auto Fasty(if I could get some of the 94 octane regular gas they used in 1968 I could probably get 45 mpg, too) ------------------------------------------------------------------- Too much?
