I occasionally have to replace brushes in one, and have seen a few failures over the years, but it is amasing the length of service that they seem to give. My daily driver is showing symptoms of worn out brushes, but this is hard to believe in a 73 with only 88K miles on it. I suspect that I will open it up and find that the brush holders are caked with brush residue that has made them sticky so the brushes can't be pushed in against the commutator. I suppost that is a bit more likely in a 25 year old starter. I'll try to remember to let you know what I actually find.
