I think the rags get a little too much bad publicity. For one thing, not every article is written by the staff -- they accept submissions from readers as well. Also, you don't see many features/articles about Type IIIs because there aren't that many. Every dog's brother has a Bug but when was the last time you were at a general VW show and Type IIIs outnumbered Type Is and IIs? None that I've ever been to! I know if it weren't for the rags I wouldn't know of half of the after-market suppliers that have helped me out. For the general owner they supply a reasonable source of information, particularly to those who don't bother to get a Bentley or Haynes manual (I've lost track of the questions that could easily be answered if the owner had one of the manuals). I find useful information even from information focused on the non-T3s since parts of the engine and theory are the same and body/paint modifications/repair are generally transferable between models. Don't narrow your scope to just the particular vehicle being covered, see how it can apply to your car. I will get a HotRod magazine once in awhile -- clearly a non-VW publication -- to get ideas for my baby and find items that haven't hit the VW scene yet (the new power window lift kits, solenoids and door actuators now advertised are good examples). I would suggest that one of our more knowledgeable members write and article on how to *troubleshoot* the Type III FI system and what should/shouldn't be done to fix it. The list could provide feedback if desired (gee, imagine the by-line if that was published! :) Toby Erkson air_cooled_nut@pobox.com <-- Please use this address for email '72 VW Squareback 1.6L bored and stroked to 2.0L, Berg five-speed '75 Porsche 914 1.8L, ORPCA member Portland, Oregon, http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/8501/ >-----Original Message----- >I agree completely about holding those magazines suspect.
