Today Matt and I decided to clean up the wrecked 71 squareback...so we pushed it out of the garage and jump started it with Matt's GTi. We assumed it needed to be jumped because it has sat for over 4 1/2 months not being driven (since the accident). It had been started and driven around at the shop it sat at until it ran out of gas, and then it probably sat idle for 2 weeks to 1 month. When we jumped it the first time today, we had to rev the GTi motor to get the squareback to start. We drove it and let it run for a few minutes, but when I turned it off it would not start again. The tach needle moves, but the motor does not turn over and no dash lights come on. We jumped it again, and this time it started right away, with no revving of the GTi. This time we let it sit and idle for a good hour while we attempted to install a lovely non-fitting aftermarket antenna on the 71 notch. When I turned off the square after an hour of running, it had no power again. The tach needle moves, that's it. Is this a bad generator? I have had 3 bad batteries in a row, and took it to a reputable repair shop every time and had the full tests for draws and bad generators, and it always turned out to be the battery not holding a charge. Also, I really doubt this has anything to do with the problem, but the car has no front fenders (accident again), so the headlight/turn signal wires are just laying in the trunk. Some had to be cut to get the driver's side fender off since it was mushed back so far. Any ideas as to what's wrong? We really hate having to jump the car every time we want to start it...it's probably something simple, but I don't even know where to start looking.
